A Closer Look at Rose and Shrub Diseases

Due to the frequent rain we've been receiving in our area this spring, you might notice some strange foliage or discoloration on your roses or other plants. Here are some common diseases to look out for and how to treat them to prevent them from causing further damage:

Black Spot (Diplocarpon rosae):

Symptoms include black or dark brown spots on the leaves, often with a yellow halo around them.

Severe infections can cause defoliation, weakening the plant over time.

Downy Mildew (Peronospora sparsa):

Downy mildew typically affects roses in cooler, wet conditions.

Symptoms include yellow or pale green spots on the upper surface of leaves and a grayish-purple fuzz on the underside. Infected leaves may eventually turn brown and drop prematurely.

Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera pannosa):

Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery substance on the leaves, stems, and buds of roses.

It can distort new growth and lead to stunted development if left untreated.

Rust (Phragmidium spp.):

Rust appears as orange or rust-colored pustules on the undersides of leaves, often accompanied by yellowing or browning of the upper leaf surface.

Severe infections can cause leaf drop and weaken the plant.
